Hi, Iβm Jim Fuhrmann from West Hartford, Connecticut. When I drove a family friend to the Amtrak Auto Train in Lorton, VA (November 20β22, 2025), I took this exact route β and it was perfect. No traffic nightmares (only minor delays), beautiful scenery through Pennsylvania farmlands and Gettysburg, and we arrived rested and on time.
Total distance: 439 miles
Total drive time: 8 hours (spread over 2 easy days)
Why this route: Avoids NYC, Philly, Baltimore, and D.C. rush hour completely
Hereβs every turn, gas stop, hotel, and pro tip β so you can follow it yourself or know exactly what to expect when I drive you.
I chose I-84 β I-81 β US-15 over the obvious I-95 because it dodges the worst of the Northeast's traffic traps: NYC, Philly, Baltimore, and especially Washington, DC's Beltway (I-495). This route is 439 miles of mostly scenic farmland and rolling hillsβperfect for relaxed driving with time for those little moments that make trips memorable.
The DC area is a traffic apocalypse: according to a recent NBC Washington report, it's now one of the top 10 worst traffic cities in the U.S., with drivers losing over 100 hours a year to congestion. Rush hour on I-95 can add 2-3 hours to your trip, turning a 3-hour drive into a 6-hour nightmare.
Pro tip: Stick to US-15 through Gettysburgβit's slower but stress-free. I-495 bypasses the Beltway entirely, saving you from that infamous parking lot.
